Pressestimmen
This painful, respectful story of redemption is well worth delving into Yiddish-laden prose. (Kirkus Reviews, starred review)This thoughtful, disturbing, and insightful novel provides an insider's view of an insular society. (School Library Journal)Emotionally riveting. . . The charm of Gittel's narration stems from her mix of respect for her community's traditions and the humor that arises from a child trying to make sense of her world. (Jennifer M. Brown, Shelf Awareness)I couldn't put Hush down. Gripping, fascinating and poignant, the book is bravely written. ...An extremely well-crafted story that keeps you turning pages. (Teenreads.com)

This novel is told by Gittel, a young Hasidic girl. She tells events that happened to her and her friend Devory when both of them were nine, and then some 10 years later, when Gittel, as an 18-year-old is getting ready to marry, but has to face the things that happened in the past.I really don't know how I can say more without giving too much away. But the novel is definitely very well written and it deals with very sore subjects. It illuminates life in a tightly knit Hasidic community in Brooklyn. It especially illuminates the psychological effects of social control.Eishes Chayil is (obviously) a pseudonym. The author published this before she left her Hasidic community. She has now published another novel, under her real name, Judy Brown, and writes for the Forward and other publications.
